I just spent 6 hours in my room auditioning the new Genelec 8040's and 8050's with subwoofer, just to keep me informed as to what's happening out there in the mixing field. I found them to be exceeeeeeeeeeeeeedingly better than the previous series of Genelecs. Much better bass articulation, lower distortion, less diffraction, much better headroom and power handling than the previous 10XX series. The only thing remaining with these speakers is a tetch of a peak in the presence range, circa 2-4 kHz, which can be alleviated enough in my opinion by using them far field (say, 9 feet equilateral triangle), and properly aligning the subwoofer so that the low bass extension increases the sense of "weight" to offset the peak. This remnant presence peak generally only manifests itself at high levels. So, I'd love to hear a "shootout" between these new and respectable Genelecs and one of my other favs, the Dynaudio BM15A with its sub, so I'm glad you mentioned it. The Dyn won't have that presence peak, but I think its bass articulation may not be as clear as the 8050, so it's not a win-win situation. I think a mix engineer can now get a much better mix than ever before if he can use the 8050's in far field. Perhaps by using the HF -2 dB shelf they might work nearfield, but my inclination is to suggest the 8040's in that case instead. As long as you don't play them very loud, the 8040's sound very smooth. BK"
